DHANTERAS also known as Dhanatrayodashi marks first day of Diwali celebrations. Diwali is one of the major festivals of Hindus celebrated throughout the world. Dhanteras is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna paksha according to the Hindu calendar month of Kartik to worship Lord Dhanvantrai. It is a festival where we start fresh hopes, light up our dreams; look for the new opportunities, undiscovered avenues, feeling of togetherness, different perspectives, desire to bring and beautiful eternities. Let’s hope on this auspicious festival, may our lives shimmer with silver, shine with gold, and dazzle like platinum with peace and happiness.
The beliefs related to the Dhanteras have nourished the concept of shopping mania in people. People now shop endlessly and extravagantly on this day. Different brands also try to utilize this festive period to boost their sale. Dhanteras is also known as cleanliness day. Useless things are thrown out of homes. It is done because in Indian culture garbage and waste are considered bad omen, therefore, people focus more on cleanliness. However, in my opinion, we should concentrate more on cleaning our mind and soul. We should celebrate Dhanteras as a day of reflecting upon our deed and pledge to be more considerate and compassionate towards others.
“Laxmi Puja” is performed in the evening when tiny diyas are lit to drive away the shadows of evil spirits. Goddess Laxmi is believed to visit all the houses and bless their residents with good health, wealth and good fortune. It is on the divine occasion full of prosperity and opulence, that endless happiness comes at our doorsteps in the form of celebrations.
